At Sunderland Aquatic Centre, two independent water treatment plants are provided, one for the 50m pool and one for the diving pool. Circulation within each pool takes account of the movable floors and the traversable boom, and the routing of all pipework is such that no pipework is buried underneath either of the pool tanks. This is an important design consideration should remedial works ever be required on the distribution pipework.
The water treatment system incorporates PAC flocculation, medium rate filtration on single grade sand beds, photo-oxidation using ultraviolet, heating, pH control and residual disinfectant control using chlorine.
