£60 million invested in energy efficiency in swimming pools

The UK government has allocated £60.5 million to enhance energy efficiency in 325 swimming pools and leisure centres across England, adding to a previous £20 million investment for a total of £80 million.

Centres will receive a share of this funding to ensure their long-term financial sustainability, by improving their energy efficiency to keep running costs down.  Measures include installing new heating systems, solar panels, insulation, and other energy-saving interventions. Selection criteria consider energy-saving potential and local strategic importance. This investment also aligns with the government’s broader sports strategy to increase physical activity levels, with targets set for adult and youth participation by 2030.

The funding it is of great value in kickstarting the process. Devin recently published 20 ideas for for pool operators to consider, to make your swimming pool more energy efficient,” providing valuable insights for pool operators. Furthermore, Devin is currently working on several Passive House standard swimming pool projects including  the Blairgowrie Recreation Centre in Scotland and the Rushmoor Farnborough Leisure and Cultural Hub project – the water treatment systems on these projects will utilise circa 50% less energy than typical leisure pools.

With recognised expertise in conducting audits of existing water treatment systems and benchmarking these against national and Passive House standards, Devin is well-placed to identify energy and cost-saving opportunities.
