At the height of their popularity, there would have been approximately 300 of these public outdoor pools in the UK.  Today this figure is much less, at around 130 but most have dedicated organisations running them and with strong public support.

The future of Lidos

At Devin, we have worked closely over the years with several Lido refurbishment project teams including Tynemouth Lido, Arundel Lido, Hillingdon Lido and more recently, Hilsea Lido and Grange-over-Sands Lido.  These community-led groups work closely with local councils to restore their pools and often source their funding via grants or fundraising initiatives.

Our involvement at early stages enables these groups to understand the technical conditions of the pool tanks and the water treatment systems, the challenges to be addressed and the opportunities to be taken advantage of – do you retain the original architectural layout or do you reconfigure to a more modern day layout?

For example, the Grade II-listed Jubilee Pool in Penzance not only serves as a key recreational space but also stands as a testament to the town’s resilience, having undergone restoration after storm damage.
• Seasonal Variability: Traditionally, Lidos were primarily seasonal facilities, operating during the warmer months. However, the renewed interest in outdoor swimming has led to efforts to extend the operating seasons, with some Lidos offering heated pools to cater to enthusiasts year-round.
• Community Revival: Many Lidos have experienced periods of decline but have witnessed a resurgence in recent years, driven by community-led initiatives and restoration projects. The renewed appreciation for these historic pools reflects a broader cultural shift towards valuing communal spaces and preserving architectural heritage.
